In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military authorities.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts observed at the location. This represents not the first instance where Ukraine has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles against targets inside Russian territory.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the Conflict
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on potential pathways to end the war.
“It was a really good conversation: numerous specifics, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “We explored some fresh concepts on how to bring real peace closer, and it involves approaches, meetings, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
In a parallel internal matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the opposition movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.
The charges reportedly stem from an online post Udaltsov shared in support of another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the charges as fabricated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
The Kremlin has stated it is engaged with French officials concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of spying.
A spokesperson said that Russia has made an offer to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all government services working to provide consular support and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
A theatre in Mariupol, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the reconstruction as a symbol of recovery.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a broader Moscow effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and confiscation of assets from local residents.
It is due to reopen by the end of the month with a performance of a classic Russian story, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
