The vehicles for the 2026 season are expected to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the simplified terminology that will be used to describe the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The championship is introducing what is potentially the largest technical shift in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased battery power, driving major innovations in the cars' aerodynamics.

During grand prix events, pilots will strategically manage ERS energy – potentially on flying laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to understand which terminology would aid comprehension of the key features of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to make a series of complex features of the sport as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in favour of intuitive labels that succinctly convey the primary purpose of the system.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that drivers will have more power to determine tactics regarding power usage, energy recovery, and saving energy.

The new regulations mandate a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to aid the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy deployable when a car is within one second the vehicle in front to facilitate an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for overtaking or defending. It grants the driver peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is strictly limited.

  • Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and increased velocity, and closing in the turns for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: Drivers can harvest energy with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only reduced throttle is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight than this year, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight lowered by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is expected to drop by approximately a significant margin, although squads will inevitably claw this back as they optimize their packages.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will employ moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to cut resistance and boost top speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will keep the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive component that recovered energy from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be required to run on fully sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic production methods.
