NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly after his victory in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

However his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
