LBJ's Historic Point-Scoring Run Concludes, Yet Lakers Secure Triumph Over Raptors.

James understood his incredible streak of reaching double digits was threatened. At the decisive instant, however, it was not his focus.

The correct basketball play involved passing the basketball – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, his remarkable run was over.

LeBron's astounding run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season double-digit scoring performances was snapped on Thursday night, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader was limited to eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' close win against Toronto. He delivered the clutch helper, feeding teammate Rui Hachimura for a triple as time expired.

“Nothing,” James said after being questioned on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”

A Selfless Decision Seals Victory

James could have tried to secure the contest – while also extending his record – on the final possession, yet he opted to make the extra pass to Hachimura on the wing. Rui connected, prompting James exulted triumphantly.

“Just playing the game the right way. Always make the smart play,” James noted. That has always been my M.O.. That is the way I learned to play. That's what I've done my whole career.”

He is very conscious exactly how many points he has during a game,” commented Lakers coach JJ Redick. “He did it as he has done so many times.”

The Record's Final Moments

LeBron checked back into the contest one last time with just over five minutes left, the result and the streak up for grabs. He had six points from 3-of-15 shooting by that point.

He got a bucket with under two minutes remaining to level the contest and missed a shot at 1:01 left that might have taken him to double digits.

He passed up one more attempt – even though he had a chance. A teammate gave James the ball with a few seconds left, however, James decided to dish it off instead.

The basketball deities, if you approach it the proper way, they will bless you,” the coach concluded.

The History of an Unparalleled Record

James's streak commenced over eighteen years ago. It was easily the most extended streak of its kind the league has ever seen: MJ previously held a streak of 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and The Mailman was fourth on the list at 575.

“He’s such a team-oriented player,” noted Lakers center Jake LaRavia.

“He’s just playing the sport. The chance was there but given his nature as a player and his character as an individual, he executed the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and claimed the game.”

Reaching double digits had typically been a formality early in the final period. During James’s streak, he had reached the 10-point mark by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions prior to Thursday.

However, two of those unusual single-digit games through three quarters took place recently: He had nine going into the fourth versus the Mavericks on 28 November, then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns on Monday night.

James managed to preserve the record against the Suns. In the following contest, it finished – but he still rejoiced anyway.

“I always just make the right play. That is instinctive, win, lose or draw,” James affirmed. When you make the smart play, the basketball gods consistently returning the favor.”
