Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
