People have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the discussions said that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Key Points in Talks

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Post-war governance of the territory

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population desire the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the night arrives, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city indicated two more dead people had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medical staff said.
