Hurricane Melissa is predicted to become a rare category five storm as it veers towards the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and rock falls.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 120 mph as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is projected to reach land by Tuesday, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Advisories of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as Melissa brings up to thirty inches of precipitation and sea level surges as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th named storm in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Alerts are also in effect for parts of Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is projected to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Landslides currently triggered by the cyclone have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Melissa is predicted to move across the island nation by midweek before passing across the Antillas Mayores and out into the Atlantic.

By the moment it reaches Cuba, it is forecast to have diminished to a category three hurricane.
