A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by three individuals, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.

The purpose behind the incident remains unclear and no arrests are in custody, as per the official statement.

Police said that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a building close to the city center landmark.

"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what appeared to be a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the assault.
