Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
